About RSPB Findhorn Bay Reserve

The RSPB Findhorn Bay Reserve is located on the northern shore of the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland, covering a large intertidal and saltmarsh area at the estuary of the River Findhorn. The reserve is internationally significant as a wetland habitat, supporting diverse bird species, especially migratory waders and wildfowl. It offers expansive mudflats, saltmarshes, and reed beds that provide feeding and roosting sites for tens of thousands of birds, including species like oystercatchers, curlews, redshanks, and whooper swans. Notably, the reserve experiences dramatic tidal shifts that expose rich feeding grounds. The surrounding landscape includes sand dunes, coastal foreshore, and nearby farmland which contributes to the varied ecosystem.

Historically, the estuary played a role in traditional fisheries and coastal livelihoods. Today, it is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) with conservation efforts focused on maintaining habitats critical for both resident and migratory birds. Visitors are drawn to the area for birdwatching, walking along accessible trails, and experiencing Scotland’s rich coastal nature. Several bird hides and observation points allow viewing without disturbance. The reserve's peaceful setting and scenic views of the bay and estuarine landscapes add to the natural appeal, making it a popular site for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
